1) Float Glass
Float glass is the type of glass you have in your home windows. It is also known as annealed glass. It does not isolate as well as tempered or laminate glass, but is cheaper. To get the same amount of isolation as other glasses you need to use thicker pieces of glass. Float glass is a more cost effective solution for soundproofing compared to tempered or laminate glass.
2) Tempered Glass
Tempered glass is great for soundproofing and is one type of glass we used on my studio build. The downside to tempered glass is it can easily shatter if nicked and it costs more than float glass. However, its superior acoustic properties make it great for soundproofing.
3) Laminate Glass
Laminate glass is made by taking two sheets of glass and bonding them with a plastic inner layer. Modern laminate glass uses a PVB layer in the middle. Laminate glass is often used in windshields as a way to prevent dangerous shards in the case of an accident. The plastic inner layer makes the glass a great option for soundproofing and is probably the best option overall.
4) Plexiglass
Plexiglass is made from an acrylic plastic and is cheaper than all three other types of glass. However, it is not ideal for soundproofing because it is lightweight and scratches easily. If you do decide to use plexiglass you will need a very thick piece to have the same amount of soundproofing as any of the other three types of glass. If you do decide to go with plexiglass for it's affordability, make sure to get window grade plexiglass.
