Building A Studio With Concrete Blocks

In this video I tour a friend, Eric's soundproof studio. What makes this studio unique is that he used concrete blocks for the outside structure. He then built an inside set of walls using 24" OC framing and two layers of drywall with green glue in the middle. He also created a one inch air gap from the concrete blocks to decouple the inside walls from the outside structure.

One big take away from this design is to make sure you use two sliding glass doors with an air gap for your vocal booth or buy a pre-fabricated soundproof sliding glass door. Overly industries is a good company for soundproof doors. Eric only put in one sliding door and he said you could still hear an iphone speaker playing. That is definitely not ideal.

Using An Airlock Design

I really liked Eric's use of two doors to make a sound lock or vestibule entrance. This is a design I highly recommend. What is most interesting is Eric did not use a solid core door on the outside. He only used one on the inside. The soundproofing was still adequate when both doors were closed.

I hope you enjoy this tour of Eric's studio and if you want to take a deeper dive into soundproofing then check out our Soundproofing Workshop at the link below.
