4) The Cons To Doing The Work Yourself

1) The Pros of Hiring a Contractor

The pros to hiring a contractor a numerous. First, you don't have to do as much work and can simply manage the project saving you countless hours. Second, you don't carry the responsibility of getting the project done on time and having insurance. Third, the project will go so much faster if it is hired out. Fourth, it could end up being a better product if the contractors are really good at what they do. Lastly, you won't have to deal with codes and permits, which can be very time consuming.

2) The Cons To Hiring A Contractor

There are definitely some cons to paying someone else to do all the work. First, you still must oversee that the soundproofing part of the build is done correctly. Most contractors won't necessarily know how to build a soundproof studio, so you may have to teach them how to do it. Second, you must know and research the soundproofing concepts. Even if you don't build it you still need to know how to build it. Third, it will inevitably cost way more to hire out the entire project. Contractors have their own overhead and must charge more for the same service you could do yourself. Fourth, if your contractor rushes the project they may make errors or simply build a cheap lower quality structure.

3) The Pros To Doing the Work Yourself

The pros to build a studio yourself or alongside a contractor are significant. First, you get the satisfaction of knowing you built your dream studio by hand. I am so proud of my studio and it does feel good to tell people I built it myself. Second, you end up understanding your studio at a deep level that allows you to appreciate the nuances of the physics and beauty of the design. This is also helpful for future builds or for future renovations. Third, it will be cheaper to do the work yourself. You can save upwards of $12K-15K doing some or all of the work yourself. Lastly, the end product will probably look great because when you do it yourself you take your time and make sure it is done right.

4) The Cons To Doing The Work Yourself

Don't be fooled, doing the work yourself will not be easy. First, it will take up at least one day a week and most likely 2-3 if you want to get it done in a year or less. This said, it will also take way longer to build than if you hired it out. Third, it will add stress to your life, so if your plate is already full you might want to hire it out. Fourth, you will end up having way more to manage and oversee. This means you will order lots of specific soundproofing parts, manage schedules and need to make sure products arrive on time to install in your studio. Fifth, you will need to do your own codes and permits, which takes time and is hard to navigate without any prior experience. Lastly, ultimately you are responsible if anything goes wrong. Make sure you know the risk of taking on the project and what could happen. You might even look to make sure you are properly insured.
